New directions...

For those of you who don't know and clearly realize I've been super slow at updating my life on my blog, I accepted the position as Sport Development Communications Coordinator at Golf Canada last week!

This is pretty fun for me and I'm very excited to be part of a company that not only has helped me become a better player growing up but also helps so many little Canadian golf nuts across our country become as in love with the game as I am!

I took this job because I only hope in the future I can make some kind of difference big or small, towards growing the game in our country. If you know me, you likely know this would be something right up my alley and I'm very happy that I get to be part of so many great programs like CN Future Links, Golf in Schools, Team Canada, etc you name it.

My first week was last week and it was a pretty weird experience for me to work in an office. My office used to be a range or a golf course and then it later turned into my couch or my room while freelancing. Having a name tag is a very odd thing but I'm quickly finding it pretty okay!

I must admit I'm absolutely baffled at how little I actually knew about so many things I considered myself an expert on like the Future Links program. I thought I was a pro because I attended Future Links as a junior and also taught quite a few clinics...  totally wrong, there's so much more to it and it's amazing how many kids it impacts across our country. So many stories to tell, so many!

Another program I barely knew existed was National Golf in Schools (Elementary & High School). Quite possibly because it's very new.

Let me tell you, if I had funds to donate this would be the absolute FIRST thing I would ever want to do for my community on PEI. You can literally ADOPT a school and give kids the chance to be taught golf in gym class. More golf, less dodge ball. That makes me happy.

My little bro learning to play...
I honestly think this is such an amazing thing because it's affordable ($475 for an Elementary school, $595 for High Schools) and kids get to play golf in their gym classes. All that buys you equipment, lesson guides etc and you can learn it in the winter inside too!

We all know PEI is near and dear to my heart and as of right now only ONE school on my little island is participating in the program. I only wish I could make a difference and at least get it into the schools I attended. Kids need to get playing and I can't think of an easier way to introduce them. Personally, I'd love to be able to say I gave the opportunity to 300 kids to at least try it and if they don't like it at least they were introduced.

I realize I'm turning into an advocate here but I love meeting new kids who play the game, we all know this is so important for the future of the game.

Aside from work, I'm finishing school and it's actually quite manageable and enjoyable aside from the fact Tuesday and Wednesday's have now because 14+ hr work days.  I will survive a few more weeks.

Anyways I just wanted to update everyone :) Happy Golfings...

  1. I THINK THAT THE GOLF IN SCHOOLS PROJECT IS A GREAT AVENUE FOR KIDS TO LEARN THE GAME BUT ALSO TEACHES THEM TO BE ACTIVE IN A SPORT THAT HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER THEM IN LIFE LESSONS, MAYBE LOCAL BUSSINESS PEOPLE COULD BE INTICED TO BUY INTO TO THIS PROGRAM.IT WOULD BENIFIT EVERYONE.
